Since Kindergarten, I have wanted to be a nurse. True story, my kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Bickle, wrote on my report card: “Becky is bossy.” What she obviously failed to realize was the worth of that “leadership” and the inborn nature of a nurse in the making! My Mom was a nurse and I had spent a lot of time in the hospital as a kid. I wanted to wear that white cap, shoes and uniform so much! I made it a life long goal to work at a job where there were so many that I admired.
When I was around ten years old, I met a missionary at church camp from the island of Mauritius. Listening to his stories and the needs of the people there was enthralling and stirred my little ten year old heart. I decided I was going to be a missionary nurse to Africa. It was to become a life long dream.
In 2015, the Edmondsons visited our church. Kelly handed me a brochure and asked me to consider a short term medical mission trip with them. I tucked it away in my Bible believing I couldn't afford it. I was also homeschooling our four children, and I didn't think it would be possible to go. My husband encouraged me to sign up and go. At 47 years old, I went on my very first mission trip and I got to use my nursing skills doing it! My heart and life were forever changed. Now, nearly 50 years after that ten year old little girl purposed in her heart to be a missionary nurse, God has granted the desire of my heart by serving with Medical Missions Outreach in that capacity. There are lots of things that will catch your eye in this life, but few will capture your heart. God has mine through medical missions.
