Early in my childhood I was fascinated by medicine and knew I wanted to pursue a career in healthcare if the Lord would allow. During those same years I read many missionary biographies and loved seeing how medicine could open the door with patients to then introduce them to Jesus.
In time I was able to complete my education to be a physician assistant. I soon realized that being in the operating room was my favorite.
The interest in medical missions stayed with me but as I married, raised my sons, and supported my husband as he pastored, there never seemed to be an open door to serve on a mission trip.
In 2017, my life changed when the Lord called my husband home to Heaven. As I navigated this new life of raising my boys alone, my pastor preached a message from the parable of the Good Samaritan. In Luke 10:37 Christ says, “…Go, and do thou likewise.” The Lord used that to revive the longing in my heart to use medicine as a tool to provide physical healing in order to offer spiritual healing. That day I signed up for my first trip with Medical Missions Outreach.
In 2019, I travelled to Honduras for a general medical trip. The Rearick Surgical Center was nearing completion. By this time, I had spent 11 years in the operating room as a surgical PA. I stood in those operating rooms and prayed that the Lord would one day allow me to be used at the RSC to reach lost souls to further His Kingdom.
God has since blessed me with a husband and a bonus daughter. He has also answered my prayers and allowed me to serve on three surgical trips.
During these trips the local hospital provides names for patients who desperately need surgical care and may have waited extended periods of time. The patients, who receive free surgical care, are connected with someone from the local church ministry, Iglesia Bautista El Faro, and hear the gospel and how Christ loves them, many for the first time. Iglesia Bautista El Faro continues to minister to each patient and their family as they recover from surgery after the team returns home.
My brother recently preached a message from the story of the feeding of the 5000. The boy who offered his loaves and fishes did not look at the inadequacy of his offering to meet the need; instead he looked at the sufficiency of the Savior. I, too, want to offer my little to a great Savior who can do miraculous things in my inadequacy.
I am humbled, awed, and overjoyed that God has opened the door for me to join MMO as liaison to the Rearick Surgical Center. In this role I will help coordinate surgical trips and oversee the administrative aspects of the center. Additionally, I will serve with each surgical trip to provide continuity as diverse teams come together.
