Serving with Truth

Speak truth into your life and other’s lives. I was reminded of this (and a several other things) on my most recent trip to Cabo Verde.

I met Jonathan and his family during my time there. His smile lit up immediately when I started talking to him. You could easily see how sweet he was. I kept telling his Mom how special he was while I was playing with him. Jonathan has Cerebral Palsy and some people may think he is not as able bodied as others. Even though Jonathan Is non-verbal, he was joyful, shared anything he was given (even with the people sitting by him), and his smile instantly made your day better.

While speaking with his Mom, she shared that she was told Jonathan was born this way because she had sinned. WOW, how heart breaking for her to carry that thought in her heart on top of life’s challenges. We were able to talk through some of  the causes of cerebral palsy, and I am hopeful that some of the truth will start edging out the thoughts of doubt and sadness. This was a powerful reminder of something that I already knew. Speaking truth (by voice and deeds) into the lives of others and my life is  something we are called to do and makes such a difference.  We can find the ultimate source of truth in God’s word, that can help in any situation.

I’ve thought of Jonathan, his family, and this lesson every day since I have been home. Several times the truth spoken in my life has stopped me from spiraling down the wrong path and or making poor decisions. Other times, truth has been the encouragement I needed to keep going. Look for ways to speak truth to others and to yourself, it will change the outlook of many things.

I love this verse from Zechariah 8:16 -
"These are the things that ye shall do; Speak ye every man the truth to his neighbour; execute the judgment of truth and peace in your gates."
