Jerry Wyatt, Faith Baptist Church

If you want to witness a multi-generational family impact for missions in Africa, then this is your trip. Jerry Wyatt III grew up on the mission field and was called back there to serve with his wife Rachel and their four children: David, Kate, Andrew, and Lauren. Their church is now two decades old, and you will spend time working alongside Tanzanian believers who have been saved for years, as well as some recently saved at MMO clinics, stadium crusades, public school ministries, radio ministry, or other outreach ministries of this vibrant church. These new believers have incredible opportunities for discipleship and growth; Faith Baptist Bible College exists to train the next generation of Tanzanians for Christ!

Why has Pastor Jerry hosted MMO clinics for so many years now? He shares that the healthcare needs of his community are so pressing that hardly a week goes by without someone coming to him for medical help. To be able to bring in a team of professionals who will meet the needs of the underserved so that the church can make them feel loved and cared for opens the doors to gospel conversations they might not have otherwise. The church’s goal for this week is to see fruit that would remain and allow church members to grow as they serve. Pastor Wyatt also shares that he loves the openness to the gospel in his corner of the world. This is something we want to be a part of!

Tanzania is a land of opportunity locked in poverty. It has beautiful tree-lined beaches and undulating hills, boasting both the highest mountain in Africa, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the largest lake in Africa, Lake Victoria. The people are friendly, welcoming, and resilient.

Tanzania has a population of nearly 62 million. About twice the size of California, this African country is bordered by the Indian Ocean and eight countries. The clinic location is in Morogoro, which is at the base of the magnificent Uluguru Mountains. It is a bustling agricultural town with one of the best produce markets in Tanzania. Being close to the Uluguru Mountains, hiking and camping is popular along at the nearby Mikumi National Park and Selous Game Reserve.

In the late 19th century, the mainland came under German rule as German East Africa, followed by British rule after World War I when it was governed as Tanganyika, with the Zanzibar Archipelago remaining a separate colonial jurisdiction. Following their respective independence in 1961 and 1963, the two entities merged in 1964 to form the United Republic of Tanzania. Today the country is a presidential constitutional republic.

Tanzania's population comprises 120 ethnic, linguistic, and religious groups. Though the national language is Swahili, over 100 languages are spoken in Tanzania. Christianity is the largest religion in Tanzania, with substantial Muslim and Animist minorities.

Tanzania boasts some of the best national parks in the world. The parks cover over one-third of the country and include some of the most well-known African mammals, including the wildebeest, zebra, giraffe, elephant, rhino, lion, impala, gazelle, and leopard. Crocodiles and hippopotamuses can be found along riverbanks and lakeshores, and giant turtles live off the coast.

Approximately 68% of citizens live below the poverty line, and 32% are malnourished. The most prominent challenges Tanzania faces in poverty reduction are unsustainable harvesting of its natural resources and water source encroachment. About 90 percent of Tanzanians live in rural areas and live off what they can grow on the land, though children in rural areas suffer substantially higher rates of malnutrition and chronic hunger.

Our plan is to offer optical care to this community. Every patient who receives care will hear the gospel from a member of this local church.
