Port Elizabeth, South Africa

Mark Coffey, Lighthouse Baptist Church

Mark and Amy Coffey have served as church-planting missionaries in South Africa since 2013. They have 5 children and the youngest, Addison, is still serving with them in South Africa. They started New Life Baptist Church of Kwadwesi in 2015, and have helped in 3 other church plants. In 2018, they founded Camp Rhino Christian Camp and Training Center, and in 2023 founded the Rhino Youth Home. They also participate in Friday Youth Meetings, Bible Institute and Bible College ministries, and a Christian School.

Prior to being missionaries to South Africa, the Coffeys were missionaries for 5 years in Peru. They came off the field in 2005 to help launch Our Generation Training Center, Vision Baptist Church, and Vision Baptist Missions in Alpharetta, GA. They served as the Director of Vision Baptist Missions until 2011 when the Lord called them to begin raising support to go to South Africa.

The Coffeys work closely with missionaries Kevin Hall, Jeremy Hall, and Josh Sullivan to make up Project South Africa. This team works in townships near Port Elizabeth which consist of more than 50% unemployment with many families living on 100% government subsidies. As you can imagine, the healthcare system available to this population is not very good. Rarely would they have access to prescription drugs, and when they do go to the hospitals or clinics they have to wait in long lines and usually don't get the care they need. Having access to dental care for them is very rare. Pastor Mark said the previous medical clinic was a great help in seeing a young church grow. Within just a few months the church went from mid-20s to 70-80 people in regular attendance. We're praying we can see similar results with a struggling church plant or a new church plant.

We know you’ll enjoy this trip to South Africa with its gorgeous coastlines, mild weather, and hurting people ready to hear the Gospel.

For a country that is pure fun to visit, look no farther than South Africa! It is famous for a wide range of things to do and see, including stunning beaches, metropolitan cities, safaris, hiking, beautiful landscapes, world-class dining, animal encounters, and historical sites. South Africa is the southernmost country in Africa. It has 1,739 miles of coastline along the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans, causing a generally temperate climate.

Our clinic will be in Port Elizabeth, colloquially referred to as P.E., and also known as Gqeberha. It is a major port and known for its numerous beaches. Coastal boat tours spot whales and rare seabirds, while wildlife reserves outside the metropolitan area are home to elephants, rhinos and other big game. The city has an oceanic climate; winters are cool but mild, and summers are warm but less humid and hot than more northerly parts of South Africa's east coast.

South Africa is a multiethnic society encompassing a wide variety of cultures, languages, and religions. About 80% of the population are Black South Africans. The remaining population include European (White South Africans), Asian (Indian South Africans and Chinese South Africans), and multiracial ancestry.

South Africans are passionate about music, often using song and dance to express social and political ideas. They’re also known worldwide for their skill in sports, including rugby, cricket, golf, and soccer. In 2010, South Africa became the first African nation to host the World Cup, with some games even being held in Port Elizabeth.

From aardvarks to zebras, South Africa is bursting with wildlife: lions, elephants, giraffes, monkeys, baboons, leopards, elephants, rhinos, and buffalos. The coastal waters are teeming with life, including great white sharks, African penguins, dolphins and more.

South Africa is one of the most economically unequal countries in the world. It has a relatively high gross domestic product per capita, but also a high rate of poverty and unemployment, with 60% of the population living below the poverty line.

South Africa is a mining powerhouse. Until 2006 South Africa was the world's largest gold producer for almost a century, being home to the world's deepest gold mine, Mponeng Gold Mine, which reaches 2.5 miles below the surface. South Africa is the world's largest producer of chrome, manganese, platinum, vanadium, and vermiculite.

Our plan is to offer medical, optical, dental, and physical therapy care to this community. Every patient who receives care will hear the gospel from a member of this local church.

Note: At this time we are only considering applications for P.T. professionals.
